Vitamin D impacts the body’s skeletal structure, blood pressure, immunity, and brain function, which is why maintaining adequate levels is so important. Vitamin D is different from other vitamins because our bodies make it rather than ingesting it from food sources. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin that’s stored in the liver and fatty tissues.
Our bodies make vitamin D by converting sunshine into chemical compounds that activate cholesterol in the skin, turning melanin into vitamin D3. Man-made vitamin D is made from either irradiating yeast to create vitamin D2 or by irradiating animals oils and cholesterol to create vitamin D3. Of the two, vitamin D3 is more effective because it’s the same compound our bodies make naturally, cholecalciferol. Vitamin D3 is believed to convert up to 500 times faster than D2 and is estimated to be four times more effective than D2.
Due to modern indoor lifestyles, up to two-thirds of adult populations in western countries are believed to suffer from vitamin D deficiencies. Not only do people spend more time indoors today, sunblock or sunscreen is used when outdoors to protect against skin cancer. However, the use of sunscreen can reduce the body’s ability to produce vitamin D by 99%. Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to a number of conditions including osteoporosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, autoimmune diseases, depression, insomnia, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, MS, chronic pain and fibromyalgia.
The only way to check your vitamin D levels is with a blood test carried out by your doctor. 50+ is a good reading. A reading of 30 – 50 is reason to consider ways to increase the levels of vitamin D in your body, for example, by taking a supplement. A reading less than 30 is dangerous, and will require immediate response including diet and lifestyle changes, and taking a supplement.
